MY POINT OF VIEW ON 80s FASHION TRENDS!
Posted by Eric Daman in ASK ERIC!, ERIC DAMAN, Eric Daman Style, THE CARRIE DIARIES on April 3, 2013
True fashionistas will see how the vision of The Carrie Diaries 80s fashion is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of the 80s. To prepare my team for what was coming, I created this series to describe what I felt would be the most important aspects of 80′s fashion to include in The Carrie Diaries. Most people watching The Carrie Diaries were born in the 90s. And I think most people in the cast were born in the 90s too for that matter! So, I made sure to use a combination of modern and vintage images and fashions, and keep a high-low mix of street wear, runway, couture, and mass market. I focused on the trends I could see being viable options and sustainable over the duration of hopefully many continuous seasons.
There were so many fashion inspirations in the 80s. Some of them were geographic, some of them were cultural, some retro, some neo. It was a fabulous kaleidoscopic influx of global proportions in a way that had never happened before.

THEY COVETEUR’ED ME: The Coveteur Comes Backstage for a Close-Up Look in Carrie’s Closet (and Mine, too!)
Posted by Eric Daman in ERIC DAMAN, THE CARRIE DIARIES on March 8, 2013
I was fortunate enough to invite The Coveteur’s creative team to the set of The Carrie Diaries to capture the show’s wardrobe and see the inspiration behind Carrie’s (and the rest of the girls’) on-screen looks. To up the ante, I brought along a few wardrobe must-haves from my own closet at home for an up-close and personal tour of what’s going on behind the scenes of The Carrie Diaries, and to show you what’s waiting in the wings for me when I get dressed and ready to make it work!

Carrie’s Chakra Meditation: Balancing Fame & Fashion & The High School Dance

A STAR IS BORN
Look at the incredible detail built into this ballet dress by Georges Chakra! The decollete is sheer nude encrusted with green crystals and rhinestones! And it frames her Alex Woo “C” necklace amazingly. Carrie Bradshaw enjoys her first 15 minutes of fame in Interview Magazine, seeing her hand painted Mark Cross bag; it’s her first feature in Interview, her favorite magazine of all time. The jade earrings are also a jaw dropper, with their crystal teardrops dangling in the center!

Maggie “Caught” Dancing on Thin Ice (In Silver, Sequins, and Icy Ombre!)

CAUGHT: CAUSIN’ A COMMOTION
While Carrie and the Kydd kid pretended not to be staring at each other, looking through the eyes of love, from across the gym, Maggie (Katie Findlay @katedangerfield) was a dancing queen in her own private ice castle in her iridescent sheer blue sequined sleeveless ice skater dress from Asos. I put a mini purple crinoline by Legs Avenue for extra flair! The belt is a TopShop iridescent seafoam cracked pattern (think thin ice!) The earrings are a dangling clear lucite hoop with gold dusting. Her silver glitter kitten heels with center silver bow are by Nina. #PRIVATEDANCER!

’80s FASHION FLASHBACK @ERICDAMAN_STYLE REFLECTS ON A TEEN #STYLEICON
Posted by Eric Daman in ERIC DAMAN, GOSSIP GIRL, THE CARRIE DIARIES on January 17, 2013
Upon graduating from the tiny Mooresville Highschool, deep in the midlands of the midwest, never did I think I would end up in Paris or NYC. Much less have an exciting career in film, tv, and fashion as a costume designer. Back then there were no “celebrity” stylists, fashion blogs, or even the internet for that matter. I started college the next year as a political science major with an international business minor at Wabash, but graduated four years later from the Sorbonne with a French literature degree.
In the midwestern ’80s a teen boy would find few aspirations to take on the haute couture world of the Upper East Side. But I had a passion for fashion that kept driving me forward to the next level. I would drive an hour to the nearest mall to get Interview Magazine. Now I have the privilege and honor to be a part of it all, right outside my East village doorstep.
Recently, I found my senior portrait, above. It’s a far cry from my modelling days with Steven Meisel, but still relevant, and quite revealing. As you can see, my love of accessories goes back a long way! I would wear proudly wear my entire Swatch collection, all at the same time, naturally. I know I raised a few eyebrows but I didn’t care. It must be then in the back of mind I was unconsciously formulating a mantra of my own: Don’t apologize, accessorize.
After almost 25 years of taking chances and leaps of faith, here I am. Looking back on my own ’80s coming-of-age era, I aim to inspire a new vision with a familiar name: #CARRIEBRADSHAW.
